The recently published book by apl. Prof. Dr. Thomas Püttmann (RUB) and Dirk Fox (Karlsruhe) presents the development history of 16 milestones of technology with numerous illustrations. It is illustrated and made comprehensible by more than 60 functional models.
Of course, the book contains many references to mathematics: a fully functional 4-species calculating machine from fischertechnik is presented, Riemann's parallel displacement on curved surfaces can be illustrated with the help of antique Chinese compass cars, and with the differential and planetary gears, linear equations can be taken in hand and dynamically grasped.
