Professor Karin Baur has been selected by the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation as a scout for the Henriette Herz Scouting Program.

This year's Christmas Colloquium of the Faculty of Mathematics took place on December 10, 2025. With a highly exciting lecture on computer algebra and algebraic groups, Prof. Dr. Meinolf Geck from the University of Stuttgart took the audience on a journey from the beginnings of software use in algebra in the 1980s to today's research questions and highly topical results.

Ragil Ndongmo was awarded a Ruhr-Explorer scholarship through the RUB Research School to come to Bochum for three months and work on an interdisciplinary project with Stefan Suhr on geodesics in spacetimes.

On January 1, 2026, Jun.-Prof. Dr. Cécile Gachet will become a fellow at the "Junges Kolleg" of the North Rhine-Westphalian Academy of Sciences and Arts.

The Faculty of Mathematics mourns the loss of Prof. Dr. Dr. h. c. mult. Alan T. Huckleberry (February 18, 1941 – September 30, 2025). Professor Huckleberry headed the Chair of Complex Analysis at Ruhr University Bochum since 1980 and served twice as dean of the faculty.

At a public event held by the faculty of mathematics, former NASA chief scientist James Green and renowned mathematician Helmut Hofer attracted around 400 guests.

In September, a ‘Dive into Research’ event took place at the faculty of mathamatics as part of the priority program ‘Combinatorial Synergies.’ Fourteen bachelor’s and master’s students from Germany and across Europe were given a first introduction to the four research projects.

Brenda Yankam is a Postdoctoral Researcher at Ruhr University Bochum, funded by the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation. She holds an M.Sc. in Epidemiology and Control of Infectious Diseases from the University of Buea, Cameroon, and a Ph.D. in Statistics (specializing in Design and Analysis of Experiments) from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, supported by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) through the In-Country/In-Region Scholarship Programme.

Qianqian Jiang has been a Humboldt Postdoctoral Fellow at Ruhr University Bochum since June 2025. From November 2024 to March 2025, she was a Research Visiting Scholar at Nanjing University in China.

Dr. Alfons Skirde, long-time custodian of the Faculty of Mathematics, passed away on 31.05.25 at the age of 82.

At school, students learn the Gaussian method for solving linear systems of equations. Since very large systems have to be dealt with in meteorology and other engineering problems, much faster methods, so-called multigrid methods, have been used for such systems.
