The Lore-Agnes Graduation Scholarship (part of the RUB-wide program Lore Agnes Vision) is intended to support up to two students during the period in which they are working on their thesis, and who may benefit from measures promoting inclusion, gender equality, and anti-discrimination. Stefano Baranzini is conducting research as a Humboldt Postdoctoral Fellow in the Geometry group. He will come to Bochum three times in total, each for a longer stay, and will be a guest at the Faculty of Mathematics, hosted by Prof. Asselle.

On June 17, 2026, Prof. Dr. Lisa Sauermann will give a lecture as part of the Bochum colloquium of Mathematics.

Markus Reineke has been awarded the Tony Springer Visiting Chair for 2025/26. This includes a stay as a visiting professor in Utrecht from February 2 to March 2, 2026.

Professor Karin Baur has been selected by the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation as a scout for the Henriette Herz Scouting Program.

This year's Christmas Colloquium of the Faculty of Mathematics took place on December 10, 2025. With a highly exciting lecture on computer algebra and algebraic groups, Prof. Dr. Meinolf Geck from the University of Stuttgart took the audience on a journey from the beginnings of software use in algebra in the 1980s to today's research questions and highly topical results.

Complex Analytic Geometry and Lie Theory The conference will be held on February 19-20, 2026, at the Ruhr-Universität Bochum.

Ragil Ndongmo was awarded a Ruhr-Explorer scholarship through the RUB Research School to come to Bochum for three months and work on an interdisciplinary project with Stefan Suhr on geodesics in spacetimes.

The Faculty of Mathematics mourns the loss of Prof. Dr. Dr. h. c. mult. Alan T. Huckleberry (February 18, 1941 – September 30, 2025). Professor Huckleberry headed the Chair of Complex Analysis at Ruhr University Bochum since 1980 and served twice as dean of the faculty.

At a public event held by the faculty of mathematics, former NASA chief scientist James Green and renowned mathematician Helmut Hofer attracted around 400 guests.

The Gauss Lecture of the German Mathematical Society (DMV) is coming to Bochum and gives all those interested in mathematics the opportunity to experience lectures by renowned mathematicians live.

Brenda Yankam is a Postdoctoral Researcher at Ruhr University Bochum, funded by the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation. She holds an M.Sc. in Epidemiology and Control of Infectious Diseases from the University of Buea, Cameroon, and a Ph.D. in Statistics (specializing in Design and Analysis of Experiments) from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, supported by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) through the In-Country/In-Region Scholarship Programme.

Qianqian Jiang has been a Humboldt Postdoctoral Fellow at Ruhr University Bochum since June 2025. From November 2024 to March 2025, she was a Research Visiting Scholar at Nanjing University in China.

Sophie Langer has been Professor of Mathematical Statistics at Ruhr-Universität Bochum since April 2025 and is primarily concerned with the statistical theory of neural networks, one of the central methods for developing artificial intelligence.

Dr. Jörg Härterich receives the Ars Legendi Faculty Award 2025 from the Stifterverband for mathematics and and is the DMV's "Mathemacher" of March and April 2025.

Together with the team of principal developers of the mathematical software deal.II, Prof. Dr. Martin Kronbichler was awarded the SIAM/ACM Prize in Computational Science and Engineering.

At school, students learn the Gaussian method for solving linear systems of equations. Since very large systems have to be dealt with in meteorology and other engineering problems, much faster methods, so-called multigrid methods, have been used for such systems.

The junior professor at Ruhr-Universität recently received two dissertation prizes in her native France.

Ziegler, President of the FU Berlin, took both advanced mathematicians and guests of the faculty on a journey from everyday problems to advanced mathematical solutions.

Prof. Dr. Christian Lehn will speak on January 8 on “A Hodge-theoretic journey from geometry to arithmetic via representation theory” and Prof. Dr. Claudius Zibrowius on “Khovanov-Homology and the Gordian distance”.

At the sight of waves gently lapping against the beach, most people certainly think of vacation. Karin Baur sometimes does too. But sometimes the Swiss native also thinks of algebra when she sees them.

Mathematics at Ruhr University Bochum scores very well in the CHE Ranking 2024/25. It is among the top group in 11 of 16 evaluated categories.

“Math was never a scary subject,” says Karin Baur, who was enthusiastic about mathematical puzzles as a child. As a professor of pure mathematics, she now researches the big questions in algebra.

The climate is changing. Because it is constantly changing over the years, it is difficult to calculate what used to be the norm - and how the present deviates from it. Special statistical tricks help here.
