Minors in the Bachelor of Science Mathematics

To familiarize you early on with applications of mathematics and interesting intractions of mathematical structures in other subjects, you will choose a minor in your first year of study that will guide you through the bachelor's and master's programs.

In general, the following basic criteria apply to the design of the minor field of study:
Within the framework of the bachelor's degree 36-40 ECTS are studied in the minor subject, of which at least 27 ECTS are graded and relevant for the examination.
Within the framework of the master's degree, 18-20 ECTS are studied in the minor subject, of which at least 14 ECTS are graded and relevant for examinations.
In detail, the following regulations apply to the minor subjects:

  • Computer Science as a minor (in German)

  • Management and Economics as a minor (in German)

  • Physics as a minor (in German)

  • Electrical Engineering and Information Technology as a minor
    In the first three semesters the following basic courses have to be attended:
    * General Electrical Engineering 1 - Electrical Networks (1st sem., 5 ECTS, 2h lecture + 2h exercise).
    * General Electrical Engineering 2 - Fields (2nd sem., 7 ECTS, 4h lecture + 2h exercise)
    * Systems Theory 1 - Basic Areas (2nd sem., 5 ECTS, 2h lecture + 2h exercise)
    * Systems Theory 2 - Signal Transformation (3rd sem., 6 ECTS, 3h lecture + 2h exercise)
    For a compilation of the specialization courses to be attended from the third semester on (inclusive), please contact the Student Advisory Service of the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Information Technology (Dr. K. Sendlinger or Mr. S. Zimmermann (e-mail: studienberatung@ei.rub.de, see also Student Advisory Service Electrical Engineering and Information Technology) by the end of the second(!) semester. (status: 17.09.2019)

  • Mechanical and Civil Engineering as a minor (in German)
    Furthermore, the focus on "structural analyses" is possible. The courses to be attended are:
    bachelor's phase:
    * Mechanics A + B
    * Statistics and structural analysis A + B
    * Computer aided design
    master's phase (three courses out of):
    * Structural analysis
    * Computer-oriented calculation methods in steel and composite construction
    * Finite element methods for nonlinear structural analyses
    * Calculation concepts for computer applications and numerical methods
    Furthermore, variants of the concentrations with a focus on transportation and hydrology are also possible upon request. Please contact the Student Advisory Service Mathematics.

Possible minor subjects upon request

  • Philosophy as a minor (DE)
    These regulations apply to all minor students starting in the winter semester 2016/17. Older students can change to the new regulations at their own request.

  • Biology as a minor
    Bachelor of Science (DE)
    Registration form Bachelor of Science
    Master of Science (DE)
    Registration form Master of Science

  • Chemistry as a minor
    The following two courses must be attended in the first semester:
    *General Chemistry (lecture with tutorial).
    *General Introductory Chemistry Practical Course
    For a compilation of the courses to be attended from the second semester on, please contact Prof. Dyker at the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry.

  • Linguistics as a minor (DE)

  • Geography as a minor (DE)

  • Geoscience as a minor (DE)

  • Social Sciences as a minor

    There are various specializations to choose from in the minor in Social Sciences. The specialization "Statistics and Methodology" must be chosen as well as another one from "Sociology", "Political Science", "Social Policy and Social Economics" and "Social Psychology and Social Anthropology".

    * Methods Module Statistics (8 ECTS)
    * Methods Module Data Mining (8 ECTS)
    * Basic and advanced module on another specialization of choice (9 + 8 ECTS).
    * Master module on one of the chosen specializations (9 ECTS).
