This was the Computer Science Day

Do you know how expensive a line of code is? With the first Computer Science Day at the Ruhr-Uni Bochum, the Center of Computer Science (CCS) not only answered this question, but above all presented itself and its newest professorships as well as celebrated the start of the new bachelor's program in computer science. The active participation of the guests and exciting lectures provided new insights and a lively exchange.

Greetings from the Deans of the Faculties of Mathematics and Electrical Engineering and Information Technology opened the program. CCS Director Professor Thorsten Holz, together with Professor Alexander May, led through the event and provided an insight into the development of the RUB's Computer Science. This has grown decentrally through the innovative "Bochum Model" and is now strengthened as a unit by the Center of Computer Science and is constantly being expanded. Afterwards, the stage belonged to the new professors of the CCS. In entertaining presentations, they introduced their research interests to the audience. Between the presentations, the guests were challenged again and again and could answer topic-related questions through the online interaction tool Mentimeter. These included, among other things, how many sections the path of a data package from the RUB to Google has or what the difference is between data and knowledge.

Thanks to the lively interaction, there was no sign of zoom fatigue that afternoon: The Computer Science Day was very well attended with up to 190 participants and reached both RUB-internal and RUB-external professional and lay audiences.

After the joint toast to the newly designed bachelor's degree program in Computer Science, the day came to a convivial end with many interesting conversations about Computer Science in Bochum and studying at the RUB at a virtual champagne reception in wonder.

We would like to thank all participants and are already looking forward to the next Computer Science Day!
