On October 10, 2019, the Professional School of Education (PSE) and the Employers' Associations Ruhr/Westphalia awarded the Teacher Education Promotion Prize to teachers and students of the University Alliance Ruhr. With their new ideas and concepts, they improve teacher training. The winners received a total of 3,000 euros in prize money - donated by the employers' associations.

This is the eighth time the award has been presented. With the award, PSE and the employers' associations promote practice-oriented teacher training.

Overview of the projects

Lecturers were awarded 1,000 euros each for their teaching concepts in the Master of Education program:

  • Professor Dr. Katrin Rolka and Sebastian Geisler, Didactics of Mathematics, RUB, teaching concept "Teaching and Research in the Student Laboratory"
  • Daniel Thurm, Didactics of Mathematics, University of Duisburg-Essen, teaching concept "Developing professional action in a science-based way from the perspective of mathematics"

Students each received 500 euros in the funding line Science Meets School in the Master of Education program:

  •   Natascha Otte, RUB, study project in the practical semester "Reading motivation through scenic play?"
  • Ramona Hagenkötter, RUB, study project in the practical semester "To what extent can material-based mathematics teaching support the development of basic ideas about sizes in grade 5?"

The award has been led by the RUB's PSE since 2012. The concept is to honor examples of future-oriented teacher training: innovative teaching concepts in the university and high-performing student teachers who implement scientific approaches in school practice in their own first projects. "We will strengthen and further develop this special sponsorship award in the coming years in order to attract more interested applicants. Their new ideas and approaches will help to further improve the quality of teacher education," says Professor Dr. Björn Rothstein, chairman of the award jury and member of the PSE Executive Board.
