Combinatorial and discrete data such as graphs, networks, order structures or grids for surface approximation form an important source for the development of mathematical theories. Their analysis in foundations research is comparable to the derivation of physical laws from the observation of natural phenomena. The newly established Priority Programme "Combinatorial Synergies" of the German Research Foundation (DFG) aims at the systematic acquisition, analysis and interdisciplinary use of these manifold data in all areas of mathematics and its applications. The Priority Programme is coordinated at the Ruhr-Universität Bochum by Prof. Dr. Christian Stump, head of the Algebraic Combinatorics group at the Faculty of Mathematics.
