For well over 30 years, the Faculty of Mathematics, with considerable effort, manpower, and a great deal of financial resources, first established the minor in computer science, then built up cryptography, and later expanded the field of computer science.
This was done with full conviction, because in terms of content and history, computer science and mathematics are maximally closely related. For example, even the highly respected Abel Prize in mathematics was most recently awarded to a researcher in theoretical computer science.
The establishment of the Faculty of Computer Science is a plausible step - especially when viewed from the outside. For the Faculty of Mathematics, this step also means at the same time the dawn of a new era.
We thank all members who are now leaving the Faculty of Mathematics and migrating to the Faculty of Computer Science for very good years of togetherness.
We are sure that some aspects and organizational forms of the Faculty of Mathematics, especially the extraordinary team orientation, will leave a lasting impression. We are equally sure that the phase of cooperation between the two faculties in research and teaching that lies ahead will be very successful.
We wish the new faculty every success and good luck. We wish our Faculty of Mathematics in its new set-up excellent further development.
With best regards,
Peter Eichelsbacher Dean of the Faculty of Mathematics
