Statistical consulting for scientists and students mainly in the bachelor, master and phd phase at the MINT and archaeology departments of the Ruhr-University
The department of mathematics offers statistical consulting for members of the Ruhr-University as defined above free of charge.
This includes both consulting on statistical methodology required for analysis of your data, design of your experiments and to siome extend the use of the statistical software R. Moreover, math students are also welcome for consulting inquires on statistical analysis and visualization of data and simulations, particularly with R.
Registration for statistical consulting
To apply for a consulting session send an email with information on your statistical or R problem, your subject and your adviser, if applicable, to the email address:
E-Mail:
lehreservice-angewandte-statistik(at)ruhr-uni-bochum(dot)de
Please be sure to use your RUB email address when requesting free consultation for university interns and indicate your faculty, your supervisor if applicable, and the type of your thesis, i.e. Bachelor's thesis, Master's thesis, etc. Helpful for our preparation are also a few lines about the content of your thesis, especially regarding type of data and research question.
Procedure of the consultation for external interested parties
If you are interested in research cooperation with the aim of joint publications or projects of a relevant size with partners from practice, we will first have an initial discussion with you in which we can narrow down the statistical problem and possibly already provide initial information on how to solve it. This first meeting is free of charge. During the conversation, we jointly determine the further procedure. Services that go beyond the first meeting are subject to a fee. Therefore, an offer will be made on the basis of the initial conversation and the further course and scope of the cooperation will be agreed upon.
Examples of internal and external projects in recent years
- Investigation of the ability of Cyrtodactylus philippinicus (a gecko species) to orient itself using the earth's magnetic field.
- Statistical evaluation on the load work of gears.
- Investigation of the survival times of Parkinson's model mice.
- Applications in IT security, e.g. the search for hardware Trojans.
- Application of statistical and machine learning methods to scientific data.
